Why does gconf-edit not work to change the GDM icon?

So I have done some googling and experimenting to change the GDM icon (Ubuntu 10.04) and have found the following ways: UbuntTweak Replace /usr/share/icons/LoginIcons/apps/64/computer.svg with your own svg Change the gconf config setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name to be the name of your icon in the theme. Rogue X session bombing my CPU

Every time I boot I get the following process that is taking %99.3 of my CPU /usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-EowSOU/database -nolisten tcp vt7 when I kill the pid I lose ssh connection, apache goes down and have to restart the machine. Clear user login list of gdm3 on wheezy – where is it stored?

I tried removing: /var/log/wtmp /var/log/ConsoleKit/history the completet gnome tree in /var/lib and accountservices nothing helped. The user list ist still there.
