Are the LCD panels sold with digitizes on top any more fragile than those without?

So I cracked the digitizer on my HP envy 13.3″ and it no longer responds to touch… traumatic but windows 10 is still just as usable/unusable without touch for me (the touch functionality is not worth the cost being asked for the replacement digitizer to me) so now I’m left with the dead weight of an extra layer of glass along with a visually annoying crack along the bottom.

If I were to remove the digitizer would the exposed LCD panel be any more fragile than your run of the mil laptop display or is there usually some extra protective layer in place sans digitizer? (the screen in question is a 1080p 13.3″ IPS)

EDIT

Just following up to confirm for anyone else that is curious in the future.

After removing the old broken digitizer glass in question (HP Envy 13.3″ X2 2014 model) the screen appears to be just as robust as any other laptop screen I have encountered – as an added bonus it has a mat finish – possibly plastic which is easier on the eye for me.
